What is Myofascial Release?

Jeren has received extensive training in Myofascial Release Therapy directly from John F Barnes, P.T., the founder of this technique. You can visit his web pages at www.myofascialrelease.com

Myofascial Release is a Manual Therapy. It is a very effective hands-on technique that provides sustained pressure into myofascial restrictions to eliminate pain and restore motion.

FASCIA is a web-like, three dimensional, all pervasive CONNECTIVE TISSUE which encompasses the entire body. It surrounds muscles, blood vessels, lymph nodes, nerves, bones, and all organs, including the brain and spinal cord, all the way down to the cellular level. It sometimes helps to imagine the fascia as a sweater just under the skin.

In its normal state, the fascia is relaxed and smooth, and its layers glide fluidly against one another without restriction or restraint. Trauma, such as a fall, whiplash, surgery, or the cumulative effects of poor or uneven posture over time, can cause the fascia to become shortened, tight and hard, and cause the fascial layers to stick together. The fascia can then exert excessive pressure over the blood vessels, nerves, and organs, producing pain, headaches, and restriction of motion.

Myofascial Release is the process of manipulating the fascia to return it to its healthy relaxed, pain-free and smooth state.

What to Expect in Your MFR Session

You will be clothed in soft shorts, or soft underwear. Jeren will start with Subtle Energy Work, which will help to create a union of your energy fields. Jeren will then go through some of the steps of Therapeutic Touch, clearing you of old stuck energies, and feeding your body with new energies at the spots of depletion. She may proceed with gently rocking you side to side and head to toe. This is called Myofascial Rebounding, it helps to get the body fluids moving, and any Osseous-Myofascial Restrictions softening and loosening. During this initial phase most of the surface of your body will be touched, and Jeren will be able to discover the hot, hard and tender spots in your body that will need further attention.

Later, Jeren will apply cross-hand releases, compression and decompression techniques to the places where Myofascial Restrictions have been discovered. There will be specific techniques applied for specific conditions. Expect to be pushed, pulled, stretched, and tugged.  Jeren will be sinking her hands in your body gently and powerfully melting the restrictions away.

Your head and your arms may start some involuntarily movements. This is called Myofascial Unwinding. Be assured this is not Jeren moving you. Jeren is trained to carefully listen to the energy currents of your body, and wait for releases to happen. The tension trapped within your body is escaping.  This is a very good thing, even if unexpected and initially disconcerting.

You can say the word STOP at any time. If, for example, Jeren is working inside your mouth to relieve TMJ, you may gently tap on her hand to stop her if you feel uncomfortable.  MFR is designed to cure, not cause, pain. (Be prepared for some level of pain if you agreed to a Psoas or Diaphragm Release, though.)

Jeren will count on your verbal feedback during the session. You need to tell her where you feel the increasing pressure inside of your body.  Is there a tingling sensation?  Is the pain echoing some place else? Did a certain emotion come to the surface?  What are you seeing?  Was there a splash of a forgotten memory?

Please keep the feedback flowing.

With time a certain level of trust will be established between you and Jeren.  You may find that your unwinding will cause your whole body to involuntarily move in space, as if you were a baby again, and your body will be finding some very interesting positions in space in which to reside and heal.

This is a healthy, healing experience, be assured that Jeren will maintain a Safe Place for you.

What is MFR Usually Used For?

Does MFR Work?

A 1999 study in the New England Journal of Medicine found that osteopathic spinal manipulation, including myofascial release, was as effective as standard therapies for the relief of lingering low back pain but had an added benefit: Those who received hands-on therapy required far fewer costly painkillers, muscle relaxants, and anti-inflammatory drugs, which could have potentially dangerous side effects.

In addition to back pain, myofascial release is used to treat a wide array of painful ailments affecting the muscles and connective tissues. These include fibromyalgia, rheumatoid arthritis, muscle spasms, whiplash injuries, and carpal tunnel syndrome. People with diabetes, who are at increased risk for painful plantar fasciitis and frozen shoulder, may also benefit. Elite runners and Olympic athletes have used the technique for stress injuries (it has also been used in racehorses and their riders), as have weekend warriors with tennis or golfer's elbow, shin splints, or a bad sprain that is having trouble healing.

The therapy is used for many other conditions as well in people of all ages. Those with jaw pain, discomfort from the scars of surgery, headaches, and chronic fatigue syndrome may all benefit. In women, the technique is sometimes used for relief of pelvic pain, menstrual problems, incontinence, and even infertility. It is also offered to children with, among other conditions, birth trauma, head injuries, cerebral palsy, and scoliosis.
